    Description

Theodore Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed. One page with integral blank, 7.25" x 8.75", on White House letterhead, Washington, June 4, 1904, to friend, Charles Jesse "Buffalo" Jones. In 1902, Roosevelt appointed Jones (1844-1919), a frontiersman and conservationist, to be the first game warden for Yellowstone National Park. It was through the intervention of Jones that bison were reintroduced into Yellowstone. Here, Roosevelt is writing in response to a letter from Jones on the state of the bison:

"I am very sorry to learn of the death of those wild buffalo, but I am much pleased at what you tell me of the calf crop in the tame herd. I will take up at once with the Secretary the matter of cross-breeding, and let you know."

Jones successfully built up the herd with bison imported from Texas and Montana. In 1906, he was let go as warden due to his strict rules against alcohol and tobacco use and gambling amongst his employees. Following his departure, he successfully crossbred Galloway cattle with bison to produce the cattalo on a government ranch near the Grand Canyon.

With original transmittal envelope and 3" x 3.25", black and white photograph of Roosevelt astride a horse. Usual fold with slight wrinkling of the paper. Roosevelt's signature is bold and very bright. Edges are toned and lightly chipped in places.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
