Theodore Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed as President. One page with integral blank, on White House letterhead, approximately 7" x 8.75", Washington DC, November 10, 1908. Just months before embarking on his African safari, the president sends a personal letter to his friend, Judge Albert Hall Whitfield, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Mississippi. In full: "My dear Judge: That is a very nice letter of yours. I had hoped I should see you again in Washington this winter. Meanwhile, my dear Judge, I hope you understand how much I have prized your friendship and good-will, and what a help you have been to me. What a splendid photo that is of Scott: Gracious me, I don't expect to do anything in Africa compared to what he will do! I shall show it to Kermit, surely."

Roosevelt chose not to run for re-election, deferring the Presidency to his Secretary of War William Taft. Having given his full support to Taft, in addition to handing off his policies to his care; Roosevelt found it necessary to create distance and allow Taft the room to develop his own administration. Roosevelt decided to embark on safari in east and central Africa. He would depart in March 1909 with his son Kermit, R.J. Cunninghame, and a group of scientists from the Smithsonian. Roosevelt and his group would bring back enough specimens to fill the Smithsonian and allow duplicates to be shared with museums around the country. The safari would also be the basis for his book African Game Trails. Letter is boldly signed with a small ink edit to the typewritten text. Moderately toned with minor creases. Light fading; faint soiling to upper edge.
