    Description

Theodore Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed as editor of Outlook magazine. One page, 6.75" x 7.5", New York, February 13, 1913, on "The Outlook, Office of Theodore Roosevelt" letterhead. The letter was written to Herman Bernstein of New York and reads [the bold words are handwritten in Roosevelt's hand], "If Count [Sergei] Witte had written me direct I would have been glad to answer his letter, but it does not seem to me to be wise or proper that an answer should be made in indirect form to an indirect request I shall therefore handle the situation in another but I think equally effectual manner." The former president's signature is large and bold.

Throughout his lifetime, Roosevelt had authored many books, essays, and articles. In 1913, he was serving as the editor of the Outlook, which allowed him an avenue to publish more of his own thoughts, especially those concerning American defense. Included with this typed letter is an article written by Roosevelt and published in the Metropolitan magazine entitled "The Need of Preparedness: Uncle Sam's Only Friend Is Uncle Sam; and Therefore He Should Be Able to Defend Himself."
