Theodore Roosevelt Signed "Rough Riders" Appointment with Related Documents. Single sheet, 14" x 9.5". Camp Wikoff, Long Island; September 7, 1898. The document appoints Henry Kirch to the rank of Corporal in G Troop, 1st Regiment United States Volunteer Cavalry. Dated September 1898, the appointment is retroactive to May 7, 1898.

The 1st US Volunteer Cavalry was raised in 1898 in response to a call for volunteers for the Spanish American War. There were a total of three such regiments formed, but only this regiment was engaged. Theodore Roosevelt assumed command of the regiment when Colonel Leonard Wood was promoted to assume command of the 2nd Cavalry Brigade.

The regiment landed in Cuba on June 23, 1898; and despite their training as cavalry, served in the capacity of an infantry. They participated in all three major battles, and returned to the U.S., landing at Montauk Point on Long Island on August 14, 1898; where they remained in quarantine for 30 days. This appointment dates from that time.

Included with the document is Kirch's discharge certificate dated October 4, 1898. The document records that Kirch enlisted on May 3, 1898. His service records noted on the verso lists that he participated in the Las Guasinas, San Juan, and Santiago. The last document in the group is Kirch's certificate of pension, stating that he is entitled to a monthly pension of $15 for his service. The pension document is dated October 13, 1924.

Condition: The appointment is very clean and with flattened folds. Discharge document has heavy wear and soiling, with multiple folds and creasing. Pension document is near fine, with two horizontal flattened folds.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
