Description

Theodore Roosevelt Military Appointment Signed with Related Ephemera. One partially-printed page, 21" x 16", Washington, May 3, 1907, appointing "Charles B. Gatewood . . . First Lieutenant in the Artillery Corps in the service of the United States." Countersigned by future president William Howard Taft as secretary of war. Chipped edges show some light toning.

With a second certificate, one partially-printed page, measuring 11.75" x 15.75", Washington, March 4, 1905, appointing Gatewood "to serve as Aid to the Grand Marshal in the parade in the City of Washington at the Inauguration of Theodore Roosevelt as President" and a collection of printed orders bound along the left margin, dating from 1906 through 1930, belonging to Gatewood.

Gatewood was the son of Lt. Charles B. Gatewood (1853-1896) who is best remembered for convincing Geronimo to surrender for the final time.
