Description
Theodore Roosevelt Military Appointment Signed with Related Ephemera. One partially-printed page, 21" x 16", Washington, May 3, 1907, appointing "Charles B. Gatewood . . . First Lieutenant in the Artillery Corps in the service of the United States." Countersigned by future president William Howard Taft as secretary of war. Chipped edges show some light toning.With a second certificate, one partially-printed page, measuring 11.75" x 15.75", Washington, March 4, 1905, appointing Gatewood "to serve as Aid to the Grand Marshal in the parade in the City of Washington at the Inauguration of Theodore Roosevelt as President" and a collection of printed orders bound along the left margin, dating from 1906 through 1930, belonging to Gatewood.
Gatewood was the son of Lt. Charles B. Gatewood (1853-1896) who is best remembered for convincing Geronimo to surrender for the final time.
