Theodore Roosevelt: Deeds Related to the Roosevelt Family Home. Group of three documents related to the transfer of ownership of the Roosevelt Family home on 20th Street in Gramercy Park, Manhattan, birthplace of President Theodore Roosevelt. The site, though ravaged by fire, was renovated and restored. It now operates under the authority of the National Park Service. They have one large room housing a very extensive collection of TR political memorabilia. The first document in this group is an October 4, 1854 indenture or quit claim deed, transferring ownership of 28 E. 20th Street (a 25' x 92' parcel of land) from Cornelius V. S. and Margaret Roosevelt to their son Theodore (1831-1878) for the consideration of $1. Signed by Cornelius and Margaret at the bottom. The document measures 10" x 16". A similar document dated May 28, 1884 transfers the same property (bequeathed by Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. to his children in 1878) from Theodore Roosevelt, brother Elliott Roosevelt and his wife, sister Corinne Roosevelt and her husband, to sister Anna L. Roosevelt. The transfer also involves Piers No. 9 and 10 on the East River. The notarized document contains the signatures of the parties on the second page, along with that of witnesses. The top signature is that of Theodore Roosevelt himself. Yet another document, also dated May 28, 1884, transfers the same property from James A. Roosevelt (TR's uncle) and James K. Gracie, executors of the estate of Theodore Roosevelt, Sr., to Anna L. Roosevelt, for the consideration of $34,000. It is notarized and signed by those two gentlemen on the third page. Significant history!
