Description
Theodore Roosevelt Autograph Letter Signed "Theodore Roosevelt." Two pages (of a bifolium), 4" x 6", New York, New York; February 8, 1889. Letter to Douglas Brymner (1823-1902), a Canadian politician, journalist, civil servant, and archivist, in which he writes about research for his multi-volume book, The Winning of the West, which was published in 1896. "Just after sending my letter to you this morning, I received your more than courteous answer to my first note. I can only assure you that I deeply appreciate your kindness, which saves me the necessity of a journey to Ottawa. I have been very anxious to give the loyalist and Indian side of the attack on Vincennes, Crawford's defeat, the battle of the Blue Licks, etc. My first volume will be out in May; I shall send you a copy."Roosevelt wrote this letter at a time he thought his political career had ended. He had run for mayor of New York City in 1886 and lost the election. He then devoted his free time to research and writing The Winning of the West.
Condition: Letter has the usual folds; otherwise good.
