Description

Theodore Roosevelt Autograph Letter Signed "Theodore Roosevelt". One page of a bifolium, 5.75" x 7.75", Sagamore Hill, January 6, 1917. A letter to "Arthur":

"If I would accept any invitation, my dear fellow, it would be yours; I really wish I could do so. But it just is not possible, I am driven to death in the effort to get through my work - and I sometimes fail anyhow; I last refused over 300 invitations to speak since election day. With real regret, and hearty good wishes, I am faithfully yours."

Two months previous, Woodrow Wilson had been re-elected as president, in November 1916. Those in the Bull Moose Party had tried to convince Roosevelt to run again, but he declined the nomination and backed Republican nominee Charles E. Hughes. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: Lightly toned, a bit darker around edges and along mail fold. Usual wear, else fine. Signature is bold.
