DescriptionTheodore Roosevelt Autograph Letter Signed "Theodore Roosevelt". Both sides of a single card with mourning borders, 4.5" x 3.5"; New York; March 4, 1884. Roosevelt writes:
"My dear Sir, the facts mentioned by you would show such an outrage that it should be brought before the courts, not merely before an investigating committee; there must certainly be an appropriate action existing for the remedy of such cases of false imprisonment."
Both Roosevelt's wife and mother passed away three weeks earlier on Valentine's Day. His mother succumbed to typhoid fever, and only hours later his wife, Alice, died due to Bright's Disease. Her illness had been obscured by her pregnancy, and Mrs. Roosevelt had actually given birth to their daughter Alice Lee just two days before her death. Only 26 at the time, Theodore Roosevelt had written in his diary "The light has gone out of my life." From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.
