Description
Roosevelt sends edits for for his book Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter
Theodore Roosevelt Autograph Letter Signed as President. Three pages on White House letterhead, 6.75" x 8.2" (sight on recto); July 30, 1905. A letter to Robert Bridges sending edits for his book, Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter. In part: "In Chap X, at the very end, I speak of the Elector of the Saxony. I don't like coupling Tilly v Wallenstein with Gustavus Adolphus. Will you substitute for their names a sentence running about like this 'would have compared better with Gustavus Adolphus in his own generation, or the Great Elector in the next generation.'? I can't be sure of the exact grammar, as I have forgotten just how the whole sentence runs. Will you add right after the sentence, or at the end of the paragraph (before I mention Louis XVI) the sentence: 'The Kings of the House of Savoy have shown that the love of hardy field sports in no way interferes with the exercise of the highest kind of governmental ability.' ... If you are at all puzzled about either chapter pray send me over the corrected galleys to go over again..." Signed "Theodore Roosevelt" and adding a lengthy postscript.Matted alongside a letter from Robert Bridges to Edward Bok, dated June 5, 1926; to whom he had gifted the Roosevelt letter offered here. Bridge's letter (4.75 x 7.75", sight) reads in part: "[Roosevelt's letter] was written when he was making the final proofs of his book 'Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter' which was published by this house in 1905."
Together with a matted image of Roosevelt with a printed signature. 12.5" x 15.5".
Condition: Dampstaining to first page of letter. Matted to an overall size of 23.5" x 12.75". Letter is matted so that pages 2 and 3 are visible on the verso.
