Description
Sarah T. Hughes Presidential Oath of Office Handwritten and Signed "Sarah T. Hughes." One page of lined legal paper, 8.5" x 10.75", no place; no date. A typed version of the oath, with a handwritten copy beneath it written by Hughes, who administered the oath of office to Lyndon B. Johnson aboard Air Force One after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. She handwrites: "I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. So help me God. This is the oath that I gave to Vice president Johnson when he became president of the United States."At that time Hughes was a federal judge in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, and is the only woman in history to have sworn in a U.S. President.
