Description

Rutherford B. Hayes Thank You Note Signed "Rutherford B. Hayes". One typed page, 5.5" x 8.5", Fremont, Ohio; July 23, 1889. Hayes was greatly affected by the death of his wife, Lucy, who passed away after suffering a stroke in 1889. This typed note, addressed, dated, and signed by Hayes, was sent to Hon. J. M. Morton. As Hayes explains, he received so many messages and offerings of condolences that he could only answer them with a formal response, in full:

"The friends who have sent telegraphic messages, letters, floral tributes and newspaper articles, tokens of their regard for Mrs. Hayes, and of sympathy with me and my family, are so numerous that I can not, by the use of the pen alone, within the time it ought to be done, suitably express to all of them my gratitude and thanks. I therefore beg them to excuse me for sending in this form my assurance of the fullest appreciation of their kindness, and of my lasting and heartfelt obligation to each of them." Hayes concluded the note in his own hand, "Ever your friend Sincerely Rutherford B. Hayes". Matted and framed along with the original transmittal cover to the overall size of 12.75" x 21.5".

Lucy Hayes was the first presidential wife to have graduated from college; she graduated from Wesleyan Female College. She was a woman of great principle and banned alcohol from the White House, but she also dedicated much of her time to raising money to support various charities and causes. She helped fund education, mental health care, deaf institutes, disabled veterans, etc. During the Civil War, she worked in hospitals and gained a great deal of popularity within the regiment. Lucy was in fact the first wife to be named the "First Lady", and it was she who began the tradition of the annual White House Easter Egg Roll.

Condition: Flattened mail folds, else very good. The transmittal cover has usual wear and soiling, with paper loss where letter was opened.
