    Description

Rutherford B. Hayes Autograph Quote Signed. One page, 5.25" x 5.5"; Spiegel Grove, Fremont, O[hio]. December 10, 1891. Hayes writes: "To perpetuate the Union and to abolish slavery were the work of the war, to educate the uneducated is the appropriate work of peace." The quote is from an address Hayes delivered at the Ohio Soldiers' Reunion in Columbus, Ohio on August 11, 1880. Signed in full with a scarce variant of his signature, "Rutherford Birchard Hayes." Written on the verso of a sheet of John F. Slater Fund stationery, of which Hayes was president.

The John F. Slater Fund for the Education of Freedmen was established in 1882 as a financial endowment to be used for the education of freedmen in the Southern states. Hayes was one of the fund's original trustees, and this quote speaks directly to its mission.

Condition: Dealer's annotations and pricing on verso in pencil. Flattened fold. Single horizontal fold, evenly toned save a strip at the bottom margin.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
