    Rutherford B. Hayes Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 5.5" x 8.5", Spiegel Grove, Fremont, Ohio; March 21, 1892. A letter from Hayes to Joseph P. Smith, concerning Smith's planned history of the Ohio Republican Party: "I am in receipt of your valued favor of the 18th, & the 'Menu' [manuscript?] showing the early beginnings in Ohio of the Republican Party. The period is an interesting one. It was the seed time of great events. It is pleasant to know that you will have it written up for the Commercial. If I could find time for any such work I would surely avail myself of your kind offer... Rutherford B. Hayes."

    Condition: The letter has two horizontal folds and ink stains caused when the letter was folded, which do not affect the writing. The letter is in good condition.

    More Information:

    Joseph Patterson Smith (1856-1898) was born in West Union, Ohio, and pursued careers in teaching, journalism, editor, while active in Ohio Republican politics. He was a special correspondent for the Cincinnati Commercial. Smith was appointed by Governor William McKinley as state librarian of Ohio and then worked for McKinley during his campaign for president in 1896. In March of 1897, President McKinley appointed Smith as Director of the Bureau of the American Republics. During his life, Smith wrote several books, including a History of the Republican Party of Ohio, published in 1898.
