    Description

Ronald Reagan Typed Document Signed as secretary of the Motion Picture Industry Council. Eight pages, 8.5" x 1", [Beverly Hills], February 10, 1954. With the threat of Communism, either real or imagined, heightened during the Cold War, the removal of suspected Communists or those with Communist sympathies from the entertainment industry began in earnest. In an effort to show that Hollywood was "cleaning house," members of the Screen Actors Guild (under then-president Ronald Reagan), Screen Directors Guild, Screen Writers Guild, and others formed the Motion Picture Industry Council in 1949 with the following goals: " to bring the 'Communist problem' in Hollywood to the attention of all studio executives; to publicize the efforts of the industry to purge itself of 'subversives'; to 'clear' repentant Communists for employment; and to criticize all HUAC witnesses who refused to cooperate with the Committee."

Here, Ronald Reagan signs on the second page of the "Minutes of the Special Meeting of the Motion Picture Industry Council..." concerning the review of "...a broad range of policies and philosophies concerning the foreign market for American films in a manner which proved highly discerning and enlightening to the membership." Countersigned by executive secretary Art Arthur. Included is a copy of the address to the MPIC by the Society of Independent Motion Picture Producers President Ellis Arnall where he discusses the "...approach to foreign film market problems..." claiming there are "...unreasonable edicts against American pictures by foreign governments [which] should be resisted by the United States Government." With a list of MPIC members present at the meeting and a copy of a press release concerning Arnall's speech.

Toned along the upper edge. Binding holes along the left edge. Several pages are stapled together in the upper left corner.
