Description

Ronald Reagan Autograph Letter Signed "Ronald Reagan." One page, 7.25" x 10.5", [n.p.], April 7 [1950], on stationery reading, "R W R." While serving as president of the Screen Actors Guild, Reagan writes this warm, relaxed letter to Chet Sampson of Detroit, Michigan. Sampson, an early organizer of the Boy Scouts in Grosse Point, Michigan, became known for leading over 6,000 young students on western tours. Several Hollywood stars, including Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and Reagan, supported and visited the students when they came to California. In addition to supporting the program, Reagan became a friend to Sampson, later inviting him to the White House. This letter, in which Reagan thanks Sampson and the boys and girls for an unspecified gift, reads in part:

"First of all I have to say - 'You shouldn't have done it.' But you did and believe me it is a really beautiful gift for which I am truly grateful. Please convey my thanks to all of your boys & girls and of course my thanks to you. It was most thoughtful of all of you. . . . Actually it is completely undeserved because I too have enjoyed meeting the fine young people from your school and remember each visit with pleasure."

Also included is the original stamped envelope postmarked April 8, 1950, from North Hollywood, California, and addressed to Sampson. On the flap of the envelope is stamped "Ronald Reagan / Hollywood, California." The letter is written on cream linen writing paper.
