Railroad Conductor's Scrapbook with Woodrow Wilson Signature. Approximately 30 pages, 9.25" x 12", 1923-1928. Contents are primarily official typed instructions and timetables for rail trips taken by President Calvin Coolidge. The final page is pasted with a card bearing the signature of "Woodrow Wilson" in pencil. Loose binding, browning, small edge splits. Good condition.

Southern Railway Conductor J. Knight's professionalism and efficiency had garnered him a regular assignment on trips involving the "POTUS" party, as the various itineraries contained here notate. (Any fan of the television show West Wing knows that POTUS stands for "President Of The United States!") This scrapbook documents several trips transporting Coolidge and his extensive traveling party to numerous locations. Knight and his crew of porters made the papers on a trip to the Key West Pan-American conference and were justly proud of participating in history; several clipped news photos of them are included with this fascinating scrapbook. Also included are other news clippings and 25 loose black and white snapshots relevant to these presidential trips. Of greatest interest are several images showing Knight's African American porters standing before a Pullman car. The images, although curled and lightly browned, are in Fine condition. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
