    Milliard Fillmore Naval Appointment Signed as president. One partially-printed page, 15.5" x 18", Washington, D.C., May 1, 1851, countersigned by Naval Secretary William A. Graham appointing Frederick Horner "an assistant Surgeon in the Navy." With maritime vignettes and a large blind-embossed paper seal in the lower margin. The president's signature is large and clear. Toned vellum with smoothed folds.

    Also included are seven medical school documents issued to Frederick Horner, who hailed from Fauquier County, Virginia. These documents include the following:

    Four certificates from the University of Virginia for passing various examinations (such as "Ancient Languages," "School of Medicine," and "Moral Philosophy") with faculty signatures, dated between 1849 and 1850;

    Two diplomas from the University of Virginia (each has a blind-embossed paper seal attached to a blue ribbon), one declaring Horner's graduation from Spanish Language and Literature (1849) and the other declaring his graduation from the School of Chemistry (1850);

    A large vellum degree (25" x 20.25") from the University of Pennsylvania conferring on Horner a "Doctorem in Arte Medica" (April 5, 1851.) Included is the unbroken red University of Pennsylvania seal with skippet (2.25" circumference), though no ribbon. The seal and all documents have been well cared for.
