Millard Fillmore Letter Signed. One page, 8" x 10", February 12, 1853, Washington, regarding the reappointment of Secret Inspector B. Thompson of Buffalo, New York ("cannot extend it beyond four months"). Folds with light soiling; fine condition with a bold presidential signature.

More Information:

The president, only twenty days before leaving office, writes in part, "You make inquiries as to the tenure of your office of secret inspector. It was immediately referred by me to the Treasry Department for information, and I have now the please to inclose you Secretary [Thomas] Corwins reply . . . he always intended to renew your appointment, but cannot extend it beyond four months, nor beyond the first of March."
