Millard Fillmore Franking Signature. 5" x 2.75" (sight). Franking signature, "M Fillmore" on a cover addressed to "P. Fendall, Esq. U.S. Dist. Attorney." Someone has written "Wills's case" perpendicularly across the left side. Matted and framed with a steel engraving of Fillmore to an overall size of 12.75" x 19.75". A caption written on the mat reads: "Presented to the Reverend George M. Minnix for fortieth birthday from Robert B. Beardsley."

Millard Fillmore became president when Zachary Taylor died while in office. His attempts to reach a compromise on the slavery issue made him unpopular with both sides, and he failed to get the Whig Party's nomination to run for a full term in 1852. A later attempt on the Know-Nothing ticket also failed.

Condition: Light staining at in center of cover, does not affect signature.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
