"How I sigh for my absent boy!"

Mary Todd Lincoln: Autograph Letter Signed with Free Frank Envelope. 4-page ALS, Racine, Wisconsin, July 4, 1867, written on 4" x 6.25" bifolium stationery. In this letter written from a summer resort, the former First Lady writes to "Master Henry Fowler", son of her Chicago neighbor and friend Mrs. Fowler, and playmate of her own son Tad. In part: "... I wish my darling little Taddie and yourself were here today to see the harbor looking so gay... My dear boy instead, I suppose, is in the dusty cars - far away from his Mother - who so dearly loves him. I have missed him, more than I can express... Mrs. Senator Doolittle... calls frequently to see me... but I object to her politics although she is a very fine woman... the fresh air here is better than paying Physician's bills at home... if your mother is back please give Taddy his carpet satchel... If you see Taddie, tell him to hurry on to Racine, he is a little rogue, to remain away so long... How I sigh for my absent boy! Your friend, Mrs. A. Lincoln. 'Congress Hall.'" Sold together with the original black-bordered transmittal envelope addressed in Mary's hand with her free frank signature (faults, not affecting any of the writing). Mary is unusually cheerful in this letter. It is both sad and ironic to think of the additional tragedy that awaited her four years later when Tad died at the age of 18.

This and other Mary Todd Lincoln material descended in the family of Mrs. Fowler, much of which is being offered for the first time in this sale.
