    Mary Todd Lincoln Autograph Letter Signed as First Lady. Two pages on Mary Lincoln's personal stationery, 4" x 6.25", Executive Mansion [Washington, D.C.]; [circa 1861-65]. A letter from Mrs. Lincoln to the wife of Dr. William Augustus Newell, in which she writes, "The morning is very beautiful, & I think you would enjoy a drive. I regret that an especial engagement, detains me at home some hours, yet it would afford me great pleasure, if you will make use of the carriage, which will be at your service in an hour. If you prefer riding in the afternoon, if you do not leave to day, I would be very happy, to call for the Dr. & yourself at 3 o'clock. The servant will await your reply. Very truly yours / Mary Lincoln."

    Joanna Van Deusen Newell married William Augustus Newell in 1848. William Augustus Newell (1817-1901), a Republican, received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and went on to become governor of New Jersey from 1857-1859. He became friends with Abraham Lincoln when they both served in the House of Representatives. He served as a family physician for the Lincolns during Lincoln's presidency. He represented the State of New Jersey at Lincoln's funeral.

    Condition: Letter has usual folds, weakening along the folds has been crudely repaired with tape on verso. Minor ink smudging in places.
