Mary Todd Lincoln Autograph Letter Signed and Carte de Visite. One page, 4.75" x 8" (sight), "Executive Mansion," January 30, 1865. Three and a half months before her husband's assassination, Mrs. Lincoln sent this letter to "Mrs. Doubleday" regarding a dress, in full: "I take the liberty of sending you, for your acceptance, this simple dress, made with a double skirt, I think it will be light & pretty. Hoping to see you, ere you leave, I remain affectionately yours [signed] Mary Lincoln." It is possible that the "Mrs. Doubleday" to whom the first lady is addressing is Mary Doubleday, the wife of Major General Abner Doubleday. At the time, the Doubledays were living in the capital city and socialized with the Lincolns (Abner and Mary shared with Mary Lincoln an interest in spiritualism). Small foxing spot at lower right corner and light, uneven toning.

The letter is matted with a 2.5" x 4" (sight) carte de visite of the first lady. She is seen in a three-quarter-length portrait wearing a dark dress, standing and facing slightly to her right, her right hand resting on the back of a chair. Both pieces are matted to an overall size of 18" x 15".

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
