    Martin Van Buren Signed Scallop Top Ship's Passport. One partially printed page, 11.5" x 14.75", Fall River, Massachusetts; March 22, 1838. Marked no. 1 and signed "M Van Buren", the document grants the schooner Taunton and its commander "Preston Cummings...of the burthen of one hundred and two 68/95 tons or thereabouts, mounted with no guns, navigated with fifteen men. TO PASS with her Company, Passengers, Goods and Merchandize without any hinderance [sic], seizure or molestation..." Countersigned by John Forsyth as Secretary of State, with a blind embossed seal at the lower left corner. Decorated with two beautiful marine vignettes at top. The document is matted and framed, measuring 18" x 21" overall.

    Condition: Flattened folds, with creasing around the seal, and light toning throughout. The bottom edge of the document is slightly uneven. Overall very fine.
