Description

Martin Van Buren Scalloped-Top Sea Passport Signed "M Van Buren" as president. One partially-printed vellum page, 11" x 15", [Washington, D.C.], June 19, 1841, countersigned by State Secretary John Forsyth. Numbered "35," the passport allows "the Barque Newton, John B. Sawyer master or commander, of the burthen of 283 and 29/95 tons or thereabouts, mounted with no guns, navigated with [blank] men to pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods, and Merchandize, without any hindrance, seizure or molestation." The president's signature is slightly faded. With maritime vignettes at the top of the document and a blind-embossed paper seal in the bottom left corner. Smoothed folds with minor soiling.
