Description

Martin Van Buren Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.75" x 10", Lindenwald, [New York]; June 25, 1846. A letter from former president Van Buren to Francis Alexander concerning the latter's portrait of Andrew Jackson. He writes: "I am sorry to say that the circumstances to which you allude in regard to your likeness of Genl. Jackson have passed from my memory. I have, however, no doubt but that I expressed the opinion of its fidelity to which you refer...M. Van Buren."

Van Buren wrote this letter from Lindenwald, his Kinderhook, New York, estate, where he returned after serving one terms as president of the United States (1837-1841). He would run again-unsuccessfully- for president in 1848 on the Free Soil Party. In the letter offered here, Van Buren writes to the American portrait painter Francis Alexander (1800-1880), who produced portraits of several prominent Americans, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Noah Webster, Andrew Jackson, and Van Buren.

In this letter, Van Buren is responding to a recent letter from Alexander in which the latter raised an issue concerning his portrait of Jackson, which he painted in 1830. Alexander painted Van Buren's portrait, which is part of the White House art collection, sometime in the 1830s. Ex. R. Douglas Stuart.

Condition: The letter has horizontal and vertical folds and slight weakness at the intersection of the lower horizontal and vertical folds. Otherwise, good condition.
