Description
Lincoln Partly Printed Subpoena, accomplished and signed by Schuyler County circuit court clerk Robert A. Glenn. Rushville [Ill.], Feb. 18, 1840, one page, oblong octavo. The sheriff of Sangamon County is directed to summon "Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Talbott, Charles Arnold, & Peter Van Bergen" to appear and give evidence in the case of Stephen T. Logan vs James Adams. A sheriff's docket on verso indicates all of the parties were served "by reading the within Mar. 10th 1840". During his legal career Lincoln probably directed the issuance of hundreds of subpoenas; it is very unusual to find him on the receiving end! From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.Auction Info
