    Lincoln Colleague, Henry Clay Whitney. Autograph Document Signed twice "Lincoln & Whitney attys for deft." Champaign Co. [Ill.], April 1858, one and three-quarters pages, quarto, on ruled blue paper. In Cornelius Thompson and Haviland Tompkins vs Illinois Central Rail Road Co., the defendants state that upon trial they will show a release from Thompson which agreed that, in return for reduced freight on some livestock, the railroad would be released "from any and all claims which might arise from damage or injury to said stock whilst in the cars of defendants or for delay in their carriage or for escape thereof from the cars…" Further, they "will introduce evidence tending to prove that the stock…was the property of Stevens & Brother merchants in Chicago - also…receipts signed by said Stevens & Bro. for the receipt of said stock in good time & in good order at Chicago."
