Description

Lincoln Colleague David Davis. Autograph Letter Signed "D Davis". Bloomington, Ill., July 15, 1854, to "Dear Matheny" (James H. Matheny, court clerk of Sangamon County, Ill.), one page, quarto. "I find that I had the bill & minutes of evidence in the graveyard case. I have hastily drawn a decree…Please show it to Edwards & Herndon & Judge Logan. If not full enough they can alter it, or if anything is desired to be added by way of getting it up to Supreme Court, let it be done." A cramped postscript notes that he has sent the Jacksonville suit papers "to Lincoln express." As judge of the 8th Illinois judicial circuit, Davis presided over a vast number of Lincoln's cases, and was directly elevated by him to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1862. A few insignificant ink blots, else excellent. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
