Smoothed folds. The first of the two negatives, measuring 9.75" x 7.75", shows Geronimo and his allies with General George Crook, members of the U.S. military, and their Indian allies. The men are identified at the lower edge. The second, 8.25" x 6.5", features Gatewood surrounded by Apache scouts taken at Fort Apache, Arizona. Sam Bowman, a civilian scout, stands behind him. Sitting just to his right is Alchesay, chief of the White Mountain Apache and himself a scout. Alchesay was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Apache Wars. Bowman, Gatewood, and Alchesay are all identified on the lower edge. Both negatives are in fine condition and are accompanied by prints of the respective images.
Lt. Charles B. Gatewood (1853-1896) began his military career at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1873. Upon graduation four years later, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Cavalry (this very commission). He was sent out west to Fort Wingate in New Mexico and, after one year, was made aide-de-camp to General Nelson A. Miles and given command of Apache scouts from the White Mountain Apache Reservation. In 1879 he participated in the Victorio Campaign, but ultimately failed to capture the Apache chief. Gatewood made a name for himself three years later during the Geronimo Campaign. Familiar with the Apache and their ways, and already acquainted with Geronimo, Gatewood was ordered by Gen. Nelson Miles to find Geronimo and bring him in for a parley. After nearly a month searching, he found Geronimo's camp and convinced him to meet with Miles. They arrived at Skeleton Canyon, Arizona, on September 2, 1886, Miles arrived the following day, and on September 4, Geronimo surrendered for the last time. He participated in the Ghost Dance War in 1890 and the Johnson County War in 1891. He retired from the army in 1895 and died of stomach cancer the following year.
