Julia Grant letter filled with White House gossip

Julia Grant Autograph Letter Signed as First Lady. Four pages in pencil on her embossed letterhead, 5" x 8", Washington D.C., April 25, n.y. [1869]. Two months after her husband became the 18th President of the United States, Mrs. Grant shares the latest gossip with her friend, Katherine L. Felt: "You will be surprised when I tell you I have just finished a letter of congratulation to Miss Jenny Grant, she is to be married on the 13th of May to Mr. Corbin, the gentleman you met at our house just before you left & I wanted you to set your cap for. You remember him, don't you. He is an old friend of ours & we are all well pleased. We think both are doing well. Jennie is getting a good very good husband & Mr. Corbin is geting [sic] a splendid wife. You know of course that Mame Stillman is to be married soon also - to Col. Pride. Mr. Stillman was down here to enquire about him. You know I think him extremely handsome - besides he is very clever. Col. Campbell & Mr. Plumber looked very much gratifyed [sic] when I told them that I was going to write for you to come this way home & spend a week with me. You know how Mr. Plumber is Consul Genl of Cuba, & Campbell is Gov. of a great Territory - Though I would rather go to Cuba than out amonge [sic] the Indians - would not you? Be sure & come by the way of Northampton home & make me a visit & don't dear Kittie expect me to write again - you know how harde [sic] it is for me to write atall [sic]. I want you to come home very very much & would like you to send me word so I can send to the Depo [sic] for you. All send love & often speak of you with the greatest affection. Write soon to your friend, Julia Grant." Crisp and clean, this letter is accompanied by the original transmittal 4.75" x 3" envelope.
