John Tyler Autograph Letter Signed as president. Two pages, 8" x 10", n.p. [Washington, D.C.], October 20, 1841. Headed, "President Tyler to Benj'n Ogle Tayloe." John Tyler was the first vice president to succeed to the presidency through the death of a president. Just one month into his term, President William Henry Harrison took ill and died on April 4, 1841. Vice President Tyler was summoned to Washington, D.C., from his home in Virginia and took the oath of office on April 6, 1841. Five months later, on September 10, Tyler's wife Letitia passed away. In the midst of his mourning, much of his correspondence went unanswered.

Here, the new president replies to several letters sent to him by prominent Washingtonian Benjamin Ogle Tayloe concerning the Troy Post Office. The letter reads in full: "Dr Sir. Your letter of this day as well as your previous letters in relation to the Troy post office, have been reviewed and will claim at my hands all due consideration. Upon my return from Virginia, whither I am proposing to go for a few days, I may conclude finally to dispose of the appointment to which you refer. Ascribe my failure to acknowledge the rec't of your former communication to the fact of the absolute inability of doing more in the general, than filing away for consideration, letter of similar import. I tender your assurances of high respect, J. Tyler." Tayloe was the owner-operator of the Willard Hotel (originally known as the City Hotel), an important meeting place for Washington politicians and presidents since the 1820s. Because of this, it is assumed that Tayloe wanted the appointment for someone else. This letter is very boldly penned and faintly toned. Professional edge strengthening and moderate toning on second page, verso.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
