John Quincy Adams check made payable to the widow of his son John

John Quincy Adams Check Signed engrossed entirely in his hand. 7" x 2.25", City of Washington, May 9, 1837. A check in the amount of one hundred dollars made out to his daughter-in-law Mary Catherine, widow of his son John Adams II. The younger John had served as his father's private secretary during his White House years. Brother George had committed suicide in 1929, and John's death in 1834 was a further blow to the elderly Quincy Adams who assumed financial responsibility for the young widow and her children. Matted beneath an engraving Quincy Adams to an overall size of 11" x 16.5".
