Description

John F. Kennedy Typed Letter Signed. One page on White House letterhead, 7 x 10 ¼ inches, Washington D.C.; September 8, 1961. Letter addressed to author John Steinbeck that reads, in part, "Miss Kay Halle turned over to me a few days ago two albums filled with letters from the artists and writers who were invited to the Inauguration ceremonies... I am hopeful that this collaboration between government and the arts will continue to prosper. Mrs. Kennedy and I would be particularly interested in any suggestions you may have in the future about the possible contributions the national government might make to the arts in America." Signed, "John Kennedy."

Kay Murphy Halle, daughter of philanthropist Samuel Halle, was a world traveler and writer who served on Kennedy's Inaugural committee. It had been at her suggestion that approximately 185 of the country's finest members of the Arts, Sciences and Humanities be invited to Kennedy's inauguration ceremony. Following the event, Halle compiled the well wishes from these special guests to be given to Kennedy. The volumes included congratulations from the likes of John Steinbeck, Tennessee Williams, Ernest Hemingway, and Carl Sandburg.

Although Steinbeck had actively promoted Democratic primary candidate Adlai Stevenson in the 1960 presidential election, he became a strong Kennedy supporter after the then-Senator won the Democratic nomination. Steinbeck greatly praised Kennedy's inaugural speech, saying that syntax "has been restored to the highest place in the Republic."
