Description

John F. Kennedy Typed Letter Signed as president. One page on White House letterhead, 6.75"x 9", Washington, D.C.; May 24, 1962. Addressed to John A. Notte, Jr., Governor of Rhode Island, thanking him for his telegram "in support of the trade program which was presented to me at the dinner of the Coordinating Council of Organizations on International Trade Policy week." Kennedy goes on to say, "I appreciate your interest and that of your State in the enactment of strong new trade legislation which will enable us to grasp the opportunities and meet the challenges which confront us as a nation and as leaders in the free world." Letter has a stamped docket at top.

John Notte (1909-1983) was a Democrat and Catholic, and served only one term as governor of Rhode Island. He was defeated in the closest-ever gubernatorial race in Rhode Island, losing by less than 400 votes. It is believed that he lost the race due to his support of a state income tax.
