John F. Kennedy Typed Letter Signed "John Kennedy". One page on White House letterhead, 6.75" x 9", October 7, 1963. Addressed to Norman Cousins, Kennedy expresses his admiration for his work with the leadership on the Citizen's Committee for a SANE Nuclear Policy. He writes: "I want to express my personal appreciation for your leadership with the Citizens Committee in its public efforts on behalf of the partial test ban treaty while it was being considered by the Senate. The Committee made a real contribution in developing a better understanding of the purpose of the treaty... We have many tasks ahead in seeking to establish a more peaceful and orderly world, and I look forward to working with you in our common endeavor toward that goal." Sadly, this partnership would never come to pass, as Kennedy was assassinated the following month.

Cousins had established the Citizen's Committee in 1957 in response to the Eisenhower administration's policies on nuclear weapons. Publicly, Cousins helped organize petitions and organize rallies. Privately, Cousins worked to establish back channel communications between the Vatican, the Soviet Union, and the White House. Kennedy had signed the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty two months earlier on August 5, 1963. Ex. Norman Cousins Estate.

Condition: Very lightly toned along edges. Usual mail folds are present, else near fine.
