Description
John F. Kennedy Typed Letter Signed "John Kennedy". One page on White House letterhead, 6.75" x 9", January 31, 1963. Kennedy thanks Cousins for keeping him informed during his trip to Rome and Moscow. He writes:I want to thank you for keeping me informed so fully about your trip to Rome and Moscow. It has been a most interesting and fruitful journey. Certainly the results so far have been promising.
As you know, any betterment of the human situation in this world - whatever the country involved - is of importance to the United States. The national interest and the human interest come together in our fundamental objectives as a nation...
Cousins had been approached by Father Felix P. Morlion in early 1962, who related that Pope John XXIII wished to provide any assistance he could in relation to the Cold War. The Pope inquired whether a statement from him on the matter would be well received by the American people. Although Morlion and Cousins continued in conversation throughout the year, the Cuban Missile Crisis prompted the Vatican to reach out to Cousins and ask if he would serve as an intermediary in communications between Rome and Moscow.
Cousins contacted Kennedy to ask permission to work with the Vatican. In response seized the opportunity to relay a message to both the Vatican and the Kremlin. He urged Cousins that during these meetings he was to emphasize the United States' desire for peaceful resolution. While on his trip, Cousins sent back reports to the White House. Cousins' trip to the Vatican and Moscow was critical in establishing communications and setting up the ground work for negotiations leading to the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.
The letter is accompanied by a retained carbon of a letter Cousins sent to Kennedy enclosing a message from the Pope (not present). Ex. Norman Cousins Estate.
Conditions: Letter has usual mail fold, else in good condition.
