DescriptionJohn F. Kennedy Typed Letter Signed "John Kennedy". One page on White House letterhead, 6.75" x 9", Newport, Rhode Island; September 28, 1961. A thank you letter to Norman Cousins: "Thank you for your warm words in commendation of my address to the General Assembly of the United Nations..."
Kennedy had addressed the United Nation's General Assembly on September 25, 1961 on the occasion of the unexpected death of Dag Hammarskjold in a plane crash. Kennedy spoke eloquently about the mission of the United Nations, and the importance of World Peace. He emphasized the necessity of disarmament for the good of the world. Cousins had been moved by Kennedy's words, and his hopes for securing a nuclear test ban treaty were rekindled. A year later Cousins, with the permission of Kennedy, would meet with Pope John XXIII and Nikita Khrushchev, setting the stage for ensuing negotiations between the great powers. Ex.
