Description
John F. Kennedy Typed Letter Signed as Senator. One page, 8" x 10.5", on "United States Senate" letterhead, Washington, May 21, 1956, to Senator Lister Hill regarding the possibility of increasing appropriations for medical research. In part:"For quite some time now it has seemed to me that one of the most important obstacles to our medical research programs has been the lack of long-range programming. It is exceedingly difficult for the research institutions to plan lengthy research projects because of the insecurity of out appropriations process.
"Although the Congress has clearly indicated its faith in medical research by annually increased appropriations, the lack of certainty has badly hampered the research programs of our hospitals and universities. I know that you have been a leader in the field of medical appropriations and I am aware that you have done much to facilitate the medical research undertaken in this country. I would urge you, however, to inquire into the possibility of increasing the so-called no-year appropriations for medical research in order that we may receive more value for the money spent in this field.
"It has been suggested by Dr. Freddy Homburger...that it would be appropriated to indicate Congressional feeling in this regard in the report to be issued by the Appropriations Committee on the pending bill. I believe that...suggestion is a very useful one and I commend it to your attention. I am forwarding for your use a very thoughtful letter addressed to me by Dr. Homburger which sets forth his views on this important subject."
Kennedy was often ill throughout the 1950s and many times received his last rites. Uneven toning; staple holes at top left corner.
