Description
John F. Kennedy: Typed Draft Letter with Holographic Edits in His Hand (Unsigned). One page on United States Senate letterhead, 6.25" x 8", Washington; November 18, 1960. With holographic changes in Kennedy's hand. Addressed to Professor Kenneth Galbraith, Professor of Economics at Harvard University. The letter reads, in part (with holographic changes in bold), "Do you think that you can get me up a memorandum on how we could organize and implement your suggestion for a 'tri-partite guiding group with well spelled out goals', per your discussion in U.S. News this week. Can it be done by Executive action or by statutory authority? After we get it in some form we could take it up with Reuther etc." Signed in type, "John F. Kennedy."An accompanying letter by Kennedy's personal secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, offers additional context and reads, in part, "This re-written letter... from President-elect John F. Kennedy to Professor Galbraith is an indication of the amount of work and effort that goes into the preparation to assume the Presidency of the United States. Professor Galbraith was one of many advisors to the President-elect over the years, and especially during the campaign of 1960."
Shortly after Kennedy took office, the president nominated Galbraith as the United States Ambassador to India. While serving abroad, Galbraith maintained a close relationship with Kennedy and often bypassed his immediate superior, Secretary of State Dean Rusk, to send messages directly to the president. Galbraith became very influential in American foreign policy in Southeast Asia and talked Kennedy down from interfering in the 1961 civil war in Laos.
Condition: Lightly toned with a minor stain to the upper left margin.
