Kennedy inscribed announcement of signed treaty to Norman Cousins

John F. Kennedy Signed News Wire Announcing Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. One page, 8.5" x 2.75", July 23 1963, Inscribed: "To Norman Cousins with warm regards / John Kennedy."

The news wire reads, in full:

"UPI-49 (Test Ban) Moscow - - The United States, Russia and Britain today ended historic talks that diplomatic sources said sealed final agreement to end East-West nuclear tests in space, in the atmosphere and underwater. 7/23 - - TD1123AED."

Mounted to an archival board, measuring 9.5" x 6.5".

Accompanied by six related carbons, dating from March 13, 1962 to April 30, 1963, and a black and white photograph of John F. Kennedy with Cousins standing behind him in the Oval Office. The six carbons are of Cousins retained notes on his various meetings regarding the treaty.

Negotiations for the treaty had been ongoing for more than a year, with Cousins playing a major role as a private citizen acting as a messenger between the Vatican, the White House, and the Kremlin. Cousins tells the complete story in his book The Improbable Triumvirate, which includes a picture of this very news wire. Although there were many players and factors in the establishment of the treaty, there can no doubt of the critical role played by Cousins, Kennedy's inscription on this news wire serves testimony to that. Ex. Norman Cousins Estate.

Condition: News wire has been roughly cut from a larger sheet, small amounts of paper loss at lower corners. Lightly toned, else fine. Boldly signed by Kennedy.
