John F. Kennedy Check Signed "John Kennedy." 8.5" x 3.25", New York; July 11, 1959. Check No. 2669 from the First National City Bank of New York for the amount of $10.00, made out to St Mary's Church. Stamps on verso reveal that the check was cashed by St. Mary's on August 11, 1959.

In a rather awkward bit of coincidence, the young Senator from Massachusetts found himself on a United Airlines flight to Chicago with the reigning Vice President Richard Nixon on July 11, 1959, the man he would successfully challenge for the White House a year later. Shortly before he left Washington, D.C. en route to his final destination of Seattle, Kennedy sat down and signed the check offered here. It is possible that the church he made the payment to is St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newport, where Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier got married on September 12, 1953.

Condition: The check has usual cancellation punches. There is a small stamp over Kennedy's last name in his signature. There is some bleed through from the stamps on verso.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
