Description

John F. Kennedy Autographed Letter Signed "John Kennedy" as a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts. Two pages, 8" x 10.5", Washington, n.d. [September 1954]. Also included is the original envelope, measuring 8.75" x 3.75", addressed in Kennedy's hand and postmarked September 2, 1954. (A stamped free frank exists under the postmark.) The letter, written during his second year as a US Senator, reads in full: "Many thanks for your kind letter. I hope everything is working out for you. Let me know if there is anything further to be done. We're [?] to be up and around soon and to visit your part of the state." The first four lines are written in black ink before an abrupt transition to blue. On official U.S. Senate stationary reading, "John F. Kennedy Massachusetts / United State Senate Washington D. C. / Committee: Labor and Public Welfare Government Operations." The envelope bears damage from the original opening. Letter with smoothed folds. Minor wear and a few small tears to edges of page.

At the age of thirty-five, John Kennedy defeated incumbent Senator Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. for his seat in the U. S. Senate. He married Jacqueline Bouvier on September 12th of the following year. His early years as senator were often interrupted by hospital visits to treat a back injury sustained during the war. He made use of his recovery time, however, authoring his Pulitzer Prize winning book, Profiles in Courage, during and between hospital stays. In this letter, Kennedy's colloquial suggestion of soon being "up and around" may refer to these medical problems which so plagued him at the time.
