Description

John F. Kennedy: Autograph Notes. Two pages on White House letterhead, 8" x 10.5", Washington; [November 13, 1963]. A series of notes in the president's hand made on a proposed typed draft of remarks that Kennedy was to make at a concert by the Black Watch on the South Lawn of the White House. The November 13, 1963 concert was performed for 2,000 underprivileged children. His notes read, in full, "Ticonderoga / Waterloo / Crimea / India/ I / War of Independence / II / Korea / 1. Britain - Queen / 2. Its honor are those of Great Britain / 3. Scotland - sent many / history has been." Accompanied by a typed transcription of Kennedy's notes, a letter of provenance from his personal secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, a program for the event, two reel-to-reel tapes of the performance, and two cassette tapes of the performance.

According to Lincoln, "President Kennedy was unable to stay for any length of time so he left the east door of the Oval Office open so that he could enjoy the music, and from time to time would step out on the portico to show his pleasure. Little did the regiment think as they went through their drills that afternoon that 10 days later they would be asked to be a part of the Kennedy funeral cortege, which would leave the White House with Kennedy's body, go to St. Matthew's Catholic Church for a funeral mass - then out to Arlington Cemetery." Kennedy and his entourage flew to Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963, where he was shot and killed only hours after landing.

A historic Scottish regiment, the Black Watch had a long history with America. Its members participated in the French and Indian War from 1754 - 1763 and fought for the British in the Revolutionary War. Kennedy's speech made light of their history, reading, in part, "Within the last month, this regiment finally had the courage to go back to Boston, where they were happily received." The Black Watch stopped in Washington, D.C. as part of a three-month-long tour of the United States and Canada throughout the fall and winter of 1963. Although Kennedy was unable to attend the performance at the White House, he was able to meet the group briefly after their performance when he and Secretary of State Dean Rusk stopped their tour bus as it was leaving the grounds. Several of the members requested autographs on whatever materials the men had nearby.

Condition: Lightly toned with slight creasing on both pages.
