Description

John Adams Four Language Ship's Paper Signed. One partially-printed page, 17.25" x 15.25" (sight), Charleston, February 5, 1798. Printed in French, Spanish, English, and Dutch, this passport authorizes passage of "Matthieu Rice master or commander of the Schooner called Alexander of the burthen 81 35/95th tons or thereabouts . . . bound for Madeira and laden with Provisions, Staves, heading & Bees Wax." Countersigned by Timothy Pickering as secretary of state. Some paper loss has occurred, particularly around the paper seal, which may not be the original seal. The document has been professionally laminated. Matted with a portrait of Adams and framed to an overall size of 31" x 28". The portrait of Adams bears a very slight tear in the upper left corner.
