Jane Pierce Autograph Letter Signed as First Lady. Four pages on mourning stationery, 6.5" x 8", Washington DC, "Dec. '54." The Pierces lost all three of their children when they were quite young; their son Benjamin died in a tragic train accident in January 1853, and Mrs. Pierce was still in mourning when she wrote this letter to her sister, Mary Aiken. It reads, in part: "I rejoice that you are safely at home as I find by your present letter of this morning. No sooner than you were wanted either, and very acceptable your return must have been, especially as Mr. Aiken had left, and you were not aware of dear Jeanie's happy emancipation from the troubles of the period... On Tuesday the reception was much larger than the previous one, and you were asked for... I am feeling rather cross of late; after the first state dinner last evening; the diplomats and others - ten ladies - all seemed pleasant and social, but with me things are to be accomplished without being enjoyed... General Scott...enjoyed his visit and dinner evidently and spoke among other things of the pleasant attention Mr. Aiken paid him by coming across the room to sit near and talk with him... This morning...went out on horseback with Mr. Webster - he desired me to give his special care & thanks..." Mrs. Pierce goes on at length discussing friends and events; her depression and dislike of politics is evident. As the years progressed, her depression became chronic, and after her husband's term in office ended, she stayed with her sister until her death in 1863. Letter bears light toning, otherwise very clean. Letters from Jane Pierce are scarce and quite desirable.
