James Polk Autograph Letter Signed "Mr. Polk" as Speaker of the House of Representatives. One page, approximately 7" x 3", "Washington City, May 1st, 1838." In 1837, together with Samuel Langtree, John L. O'Sullivan began publishing The United States Magazine and Democratic Review, later known simply as the Democratic Review. The first issue was published in October of that year, and by the following spring it was considered an important periodical containing many interesting and occasionally inflammatory political essays.

With this brief note, Speaker of the House Polk requests 12 copies of the latest issue, presumably to share with his colleagues in Congress. It reads, in full: "Mr. Polk presents his respects to Messrs. Langtry [sic] & O'Sullivan and requests that they will do him the favor to send him a dozen copies of the last No. of the Democratic Review." Professional restoration, adding paper to all four corners. Traces of red ink remain at bottom. Docketed on verso.
