Description

James Monroe Signed Land Grant. Single sheet of vellum, 16.25" x 9.75"; City of Washington; July 1, 1823. Partly printed document granting land in Terre Haute, Indiana to "William Burbridge of Parke County Indiana". Also signed by George Graham as Commissioner of the General Land office.

Condition: Deep folds, the document is stored folded in three. Blind embossed paper seal is not present, leaving remnants of red wax in its place. Uneven margin at top, but presence of plate indentation suggest that it is not paper loss, but rather an untrimmed sheet of vellum. Approximate three-inch tear right above Monroe's signature, and small tear between Graham's first and last name. Traces of cello tape on verso along these tears. Scattered foxing, and two small worm holes at bottom. Top and bottom right corners are folded back, but remain.
