    James Monroe Naval Appointment, Signed as president with accompanying letter. One partially printed page, on vellum, 13.25" x 16.75", Washington, March 28, 1820, appointing "...Benjamin W. Booth...Master Commandant in the the Service of the United States." With beautiful engraved military and patriotic vignettes and countersigned by Smith Thompson as secretary of the navy. Blind embossed paper seal of the Department of the Navy at center. Light toning of the folds and around the edges. With a Smith Thompson Transmittal Letter Signed, one page with integral blank, 8" x 9.75", [Washington], March 28, 1820, in part: "The and with the advice and consent of the Senate, having appointed you a Master Commandant in the Navy, I have the pleasure to enclose herewith your Commission..." Toned with separation at the folds.

    Benjamin W. Booth served as an officer in the United States Navy throughout the War of 1812. He died in July 1828.
