    Description

    James Monroe Franking Signature on a Cover Addressed in His Hand. Folded down to 5.5" x 3.5". Signed in the upper right corner as president in 1824. The panel is addressed in his hand to "Doctor Charles Everett / near Milton - Albemrle / Virginia." Stamped "Free" directly under Monroe's signature. Docketed along the left edge with a circular postmark stamp in the upper left corner. Additional docketing and the remnant of a red wax seal on the verso. Previously sold as part of the Dr. John L. Robertson Collection of United States Free Franks sold at Siegel Auction Galleries' November 2004 sale.

    Condition: Lightly toned, particularly along the upper edge with small staining spots at the lower edge and lower right corner. Paper loss on the verso from opening has been archivally repaired.
